Understanding Groundwater and Its Impact on Your Basement

Groundwater is the water beneath the earth’s surface, saturating the soil and rocks. The level of groundwater can fluctuate due to rainfall, soil type, and seasonal changes. When groundwater pressure builds up against your foundation, it can cause severe damage. In vulnerable areas like basements, water can seep through cracks in your slab, walls, or joints, leading to flooding, mold growth, and structural issues.

Why You Need a Basement Drainage System/French Drain

You can’t stop groundwater from accumulating near your foundation, but you can manage it effectively. Installing a Basement Perimeter Drainage System/French Drain offers key benefits to homeowners looking to protect their property which are:

Relieving Water Pressure

Think of it like a pressure release valve. Groundwater will take the path of least resistance. When it’s trapped underneath your slab with pressure building, it’s forced to push through the porous concrete, the cracks in your slab, and the joints near your foundation walls. However, when you have a 4” perforated pipe and a trench filled with crushed stone, the water has plenty of space to travel away from your slab.

Managing Water Flow

A sump pump is a vital component of any waterproofing system. With a Basement Drainage System/French Drain, water is collected before it can flood your living space. The water is channeled into a sump pit, where it is pumped out through a discharge line, moving away from your home, preventing future basement flooding.

Trenches

When preparing to install a basement perimeter drainage system/French Drain, we first break apart the concrete floor (see pictures) and dig trenches to the bottom of the footing around the perimeter so the water entering will go directly into the drainage system.

Pipe & Stone

4-inch perforated pipe is used wrapped with filter fabric and covered with ¾ inch crushed stone.

Basement Drainage System/French Drain Installation Process:

Step 1:
Break the concrete around the perimeter of your basement, then dig down and excavate and dispose of the material. We’ll need about 5 feet of clearance around the perimeter of your basement.

Step 2:
We’ll lay a bed of ¾ inch crushed stone in the trench.

Step 3:
Install a 4-inch perforated drainpipe wrapped with filter fabric.

Step 4:
Then add in the rest of the ¾ inch crushed stone and recement all work.

Step 5:
Give the cement 72 hours to cure and you can move your belongings back to their original locations.
